Wolfing to get waves: What’s wolfing? And how to Wolf right.

If you have been in the wave community for any amount of time, you have heard the term wolfing.

But what does it actually mean, and does it really help your waves go deeper?

What Is Wolfing?

Wolfing is the practice of letting your hair grow out for an extended period, typically 4 to 12 weeks without cutting it, while continuing your brushing and compression routine daily.

The goal is to build hair length so that when your waves do form, they are deeper and more defined than they would be on shorter hair.

Why Wolfing Builds Deeper Waves

Longer hair has more weight and flexibility. As you brush and compress it daily over a longer period, the strands have more length to form a more pronounced ripple. The result when you eventually cut is a wave pattern that is visibly deeper and more developed than before the wolf.

How Long Should You Wolf?

Beginner wolf — 4 to 6 weeks. Good for first-time wavers building their initial pattern.

Standard wolf — 6 to 8 weeks. The most common range for experienced wavers between cuts.

Deep wolf — 10 to 12 weeks or longer. Used by advanced wavers going for maximum wave depth.

The longer you wolf, the more patience and consistency the routine demands.

How to Maintain Your Waves During a Wolf

Keep Brushing Daily

Longer hair is harder to train. You may need to increase your brushing time during a wolf to maintain even pattern coverage across the full length of the hair.

Compression Becomes More Important

As hair grows longer, it becomes more prone to reverting and frizzing. Your Durag is the most important tool during a wolf. Wear it after every brushing session and every single night without exception.

The silky fabric is especially critical during this stage. Longer hair creates more contact surface with the durag material, a rough fabric will generate more friction and disrupt your growing pattern. The Royalty Headwear Silky Durag reduces that friction and keeps the pattern laid cleanly through the entire wolf.

Daily Moisture Is Non-Negotiable

Longer hair dries out faster and is more prone to breakage. Apply pomade or leave-in conditioner daily to keep the hair flexible and receptive to brushing.

Daytime Maintenance

A Wave Cap is your daily companion during a wolf at work, the gym, running errands, under a hat, keeping your longer hair compressed and in place between sessions.

The Cut Reveal

After wolfing, your barber cuts to your desired length. This is when the depth you built reveals itself. The more consistent your routine during the wolf, the more dramatic the result.

Always tell your barber to cut with the grain and not against your wave pattern.

Wolf with discipline. The cut is the reward.
