Every serious waver eventually figures out that these three things work as a system.
Your brush, your durag, and your pomade are not separate products. They are one routine. When all three are used correctly and consistently, results happen. When one is missing, the other two are weakened.
The Three Tools and What Each One Does
The Wave Brush — Training
The brush physically pushes your hair strands into the wave direction. Every brushing session reinforces the pattern by training the hair to grow in the direction you are pushing it.
Most beginners should start with a soft or medium brush before moving to hard brushes. Hard brushes deepen the pattern but used too early they cause scalp irritation and can disrupt a forming wave.
The Pomade — Conditioning
Pomade moisturises the hair and adds flexibility so the strands move together under the brush rather than resisting or breaking. A dime-size amount applied to slightly damp hair before brushing makes every brushing session more effective.
• Keeps hair pliable and responsive to the brush direction
• Reduces breakage during brushing on dry or coarser hair
• Adds light hold that supports wave definition between sessions
• Skipping pomade causes dry, brittle hair that resists training and creates uneven wave patterns over time
The Durag — Compression
The Durag seals in everything the brush and pomade just did. After brushing, the hair is trained and the pomade is fresh. The durag holds all of that in place while the hair is setting.
Why silky material matters: a silky durag reduces friction against your strands, pressing them flat in the wave direction without lifting or disturbing the pattern. Rough fabrics work against the lay you just created.

Royalty Headwear Silky Durag 360 Waves
• Step 3 of every session locks in the brush and the pomade
• Silky compression holds the pattern while the hair is setting
• Wear for 30+ minutes post-brush and every night without exception
The Correct Order Every Time
• Apply a small amount of pomade to slightly damp hair
• Brush thoroughly from the crown outward for 5 to 10 minutes
• Put on your Durag immediately — minimum 30 minutes, always overnight
• During the day, maintain with a Wave Cap at the gym, at work, running errands, or under a hat
This order, repeated daily, is the system that builds waves.
What Happens When One Piece Is Missing
• No pomade dry hair resists brushing, breaks, and holds the pattern less effectively
• No brushing pomade and durag have no trained pattern to lock in
• No durag the brushed pattern reverts within hours and overnight progress is lost entirely
All three, in the right order, every day. That is the system.
